Doha …Latham & Watkins' breakfast roundtable to discuss the impact of the new Qatar tax laws, as well as developments in international tax with Qatar having recently entered into several new tax treaties, including with the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, was well attended by members of Doha's investment and finance community.
The forum provided an opportunity for representatives from a number of high-profile organizations to discuss the new Income Tax Law No. 21 of 2009 and its potential impact on Qatari businesses and investors. A panel discussion, moderated by Latham & Watkins partner Daniel Friel, also addressed recent international tax developments, including how the new tax treaties signed by Qatar affect inbound and outbound investment.
Panelists included:
- Muhammad Bahemia, Partner, Deloitte & Touche LLP
- Mark Rebello, Senior Manager – Tax, KPMG
- Sean Finn, Partner, Latham & Watkins LLP
- Daniel Friel, Partner, Latham & Watkins LLP
- Craig Stoehr, Counsel, Latham & Watkins LLP
- Alex Cole, Associate, Latham & Watkins LLP
Latham & Watkins partner Daniel Friel commented: "Increasingly, clients with cross-border activities are seeing a need to structure their investments in a tax efficient manner, and keeping up to date with local developments is a key component of that process. We expect this to be an area of considerable interest throughout 2010, as Qatar's tax system continues to evolve to meet the needs of Qatar's businesses and residents."
Deloitte partner Muhammad Bahemia observed: "The attendance at the roundtable confirms the high level of interest in Qatar's new tax laws, and it was obvious that many people are awaiting publication of the new regulations that will further clarify the new laws."
