Latham was honored at the annual TrustLaw Awards, including accepting its inaugural Anniversary Award (this honor was given in 2020, but the ceremony was delayed due to COVID-19). TrustLaw’s annual awards “celebrate the remarkable pro bono projects undertaken by legal teams with NGOs and social enterprises around the world.” The Anniversary Award recognizes the firm’s pro bono work with TrustLaw, the pro bono service of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, over the past decade on more than 350 projects in 96 countries. In addition, Latham was recognized with TrustLaw’s Powered by Pro Bono Award. A Tokyo-based Latham team — including partners Noah Carr, Stuart Beraha, and Ivan Smallwood, counsel Richard Fleming, and associate Benjamin Han — advised this social enterprise as it seeks to improve access to affordable air purifiers in Asia. In particular, Latham lawyers assisted Smart Air with the preparation of its standard forms of white-label OEM and distribution agreements for the distribution of the social enterprise’s products outside mainland China through local partners.

Based in China, Smart Air develops easy-to-use, low-cost air purifiers. Nine out of 10 people around the world breathe air that contains significant levels of pollutants, and breathing polluted air contributes to the death of some seven million people each year. Trust Law turned to multiple law firms, including Latham, to help the social enterprise scale and reach more people.
