London Partner Richard Trobman Elected Vice Chair of Latham & Watkins

Trobman will succeed New York partner David Gordon as one of two Vice Chairs at Latham

February 27, 2017

Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that Richard Trobman has been elected Vice Chair. He will succeed David Gordon who has served as Vice Chair of Latham & Watkins since 2011. Gordon will transition back to client work while continuing to lead a number of strategic initiatives.

Trobman will continue to focus on his practice while also serving as Vice Chair of Latham & Watkins. A current member of the firm’s nine-person Executive Committee, he brings a wealth of experience to the role and has been an outstanding contributor to firm management throughout his career, including serving as Local Department Chair for the Corporate Department in the London office and as a member of the Associates Committee and Women Enriching Business (WEB) Committee, among other leadership roles. Trobman joined Latham in 1991 as an associate in the firm’s Los Angeles office, transferred to the New York office in 1993 and has been resident in the London office since 2000 after being elected to the partnership the same year.

An accomplished capital markets practitioner, Trobman’s practice focuses on public and private offerings of securities, restructurings, bridge loans, and merger and acquisition transactions, with a particular emphasis on issuances of debt securities and leveraged transactions. He has extensive experience representing investment banks, private equity firms and companies in a wide range of transactions. He has been at the vanguard of the high yield field for many years and is inarguably one of the leading high yield practitioners in Europe.

Bill Voge, Chair and Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins, said: “With more than 25 years at Latham, having started as a summer associate in 1990, Rich has a deep understanding of our strengths and an impeccable sense of our culture and values. He is a dynamic leader who brings many talents to the role among them incredible drive, intuition and focus.”

Voge added: “I have known David for more than 30 years, and I have had the good fortune to serve with him in a variety of leadership roles, including most recently on the Executive Committee. He has that rare combination of skills—humility, fair-mindedness, courage and judgment—that mark him as a great leader. David is among the most seasoned project finance practitioners in the US and he will continue to contribute to the success of our finance practice in the US and globally. I will miss him as Vice Chair but I will continue to draw on his advice and wise counsel as he returns to the practice of law.”

Ora Fisher, Vice Chair of Latham & Watkins, commented: “It has been a tremendous pleasure and privilege to serve alongside David. I look forward to collaborating with Rich. He’s an incredible motivator and great problem solver, and he will bring energy and ideas to the Vice Chair role.”

LeeAnn Black, Chief Operating Officer of Latham & Watkins, said: “The skills that make David a nationally recognized practitioner in his field, also make him an exemplary leader: acuity, character, integrity, and infectious optimism. We have benefitted enormously from David’s leadership, including these last six years as Vice Chair of the firm.”

“David has been instrumental to the firm’s strong growth over the last several years. He is the quintessential super connector who has worked tirelessly to support and ensure the success of our lawyers. I am deeply honored to succeed him as Vice Chair of our great firm and I look forward to contributing to the firm’s ongoing momentum,” said Trobman.

Gordon commented: “Serving as Vice Chair has been a professional highlight for me. I have learned so much over the past six years in this role from the truly inspiring and selfless individuals with whom I served on the Executive Committee, LeeAnn, others in firm management, and all of my other wonderful colleagues at the firm. In particular, serving with Bill has been a uniquely special privilege for me, as Bill was a first year associate and the first person with whom I interviewed at Latham when I was looking for a job in the Summer of 1984. I am excited to see Rich make the role his own, and I am confident he will serve with distinction.”

Trobman received his JD from Northwestern University School of Law and his BA from Bucknell University.
