Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that Rachel Weiner Cohen has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as counsel in the Litigation & Trial Department and as a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. She is a talented intellectual property litigator whose practice includes trial and appellate disputes in state and federal court.

Cohen has represented clients in high-stakes patent disputes across a range of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, semiconductor manufacturing, power conversion, automotive parts, medical devices, multimedia, mobile, and web applications, and social networking. She has played a key role in both US and international intellectual property disputes, having obtained numerous favorable settlements in district courts across the country. She also offers clients experience in international arbitrations, civil investigations, and general commercial litigation matters.

Cohen is the fourth senior trial lawyer to join Latham’s IP Litigation Practice in Washington, D.C. in recent months, following the arrivals of Tara D. Elliott, Jamie Underwood, and Kevin Wheeler. In May, the firm also announced that Sy Damle, former General Counsel and Associate Register of Copyrights at the US Copyright Office, would join Latham in September; he expects to practice in the Washington, D.C. office.

Michael Egge, Office Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C. said: “Rachel is a fantastic addition to our growing IP trial team here in Washington and is well-positioned to help us build on our recent string of major appellate victories. Clients will also benefit from her insight into many of the disruptive technologies at the heart of IP disputes.”

David Callahan, Global Co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice, added: “We are excited to welcome Rachel to Latham’s powerhouse IP team. She has demonstrated her chops as a trial attorney in important cases for technology clients, including in appellate matters. Her experience complements Latham’s formidable courtroom reputation and ability to navigate clients’ highest-profile patent disputes.”

Cohen maintains an active pro bono practice, and serves as a member of the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Giles S. Rich American Inn of Court, the American University Alumni Board, and the AU Hillel Board of Directors. She was one of 20 participants selected for the 2016-2017 Federal Circuit Bar Association’s Global Fellow Series, a gathering of emerging leaders focused on bridging the gap between patent systems in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

“Latham’s world-class Intellectual Property Litigation Practice is known for delivering exceptional results for clients in and out of the courtroom,” Cohen said. “I’m delighted to be joining such a talented team with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative culture.”

Cohen joins Latham from WilmerHale in Washington, D.C. She previously clerked for Judge Sharon Prost at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and for Judge Freda L. Wolfson at the US District Court for the District of New Jersey. Cohen received her undergraduate degree summa cum laude from American University and her law degree magna cum laude from American University Washington College of Law.
