Dr. Stefan Bartz is an associate in the Hamburg office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm's Litigation & Trial Department. His practice focuses on internal investigations, both for white collar matters and complex civil litigation cases. Further, Mr. Bartz advises on data privacy rules in relation to such investigations.

Mr. Bartz assists financial institutions and conducts internal reviews to respond to inquiries by US regulators, including the Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and New York State Department of Financial Services. In the past, he has represented individuals in SEC investigations in relation to Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations. He also spoke on the topic of internal investigations and the rights of employees at the BUJ Compliance Summit 2017. In addition, he regularly authors articles on issues relating to data protection, internal investigations, and compliance, most recently “‘Bring Your Own Device’-Geräte in internen Ermittlungen” (CCZ Corporate Compliance Zeitschrift April 2019). 

Mr. Bartz also represents German and international corporations in litigation in German courts. He has extensive trial and arbitration experience in a variety of matters, including complex commercial cases, securities litigation, M&A transactions, restructurings, and cartel damages cases. 

Before joining Latham as an associate, Mr. Bartz worked as a research assistant and legal trainee in the firm’s Hamburg office while he prepared his Ph.D. in criminal law. 

  • Advising a Swiss bank in relation to inquiries by US regulators, including the DOJ, SEC, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and New York State Department of Financial Services
  • Representing an individual in a DOJ investigation in relation to emission controversy in the automotive industry
  • Representing several individuals of leading German corporations on FCPA investigations by the DOJ
  • Representing the Seller of one of world's largest solar companies in post-M&A DIS arbitration
  • Representing the Clerical Medical Investment Group Limited in the largest mass securities litigation matter in Germany
  • Advising Kaffee Partner Holding AG in a series of competition-related claims against a competitor
  • Advising Daimler AG and Toll Collect GmbH in ad hoc proceedings against the German Federal Government regarding the “Toll Collect” project
