William Reckler is a partner in the New York office of Latham & Watkins and former Co-Chair of the New York Litigation & Trial Department. Mr. Reckler is a member of the firm’s White Collar Defense & Investigations, Securities Litigation & Professional Liability, and Corporate Governance Practices, focusing his practice on government defense and investigations, securities litigation, complex commercial litigation, and civil and criminal False Claims Act matters.

Mr. Reckler has extensive experience in both criminal and civil litigation, and internal corporate investigations. He represents both companies and individuals in investigations and enforcement proceedings brought by state and federal authorities, complex multidistrict litigation, derivative actions, and commercial disputes. He also conducts internal investigations in anticipation of potential government regulatory action and advises companies’ boards of directors in connection with criminal, civil, and regulatory matters. He has been recognized as a Rising Star by the New York Law Journal and Super Lawyers.


Mr. Reckler has represented global financial institutions and their employees in connection with a number of recent high-stakes investigations and regulatory proceedings, including those related to the subprime mortgage market, alleged manipulation of financial benchmarks, and other alleged violations of federal securities laws. He also regularly represents clients in complex commercial disputes in both state and federal courts.

Mr. Reckler's recent experience includes representing:

  • A global investment bank in connection with regulatory inquiries and civil suits arising out of its securitization of residential mortgage loans
  • The Board of Directors of an Islamic investment bank in what is believed to have been the first internal investigation undertaken in Bahrain, involving allegations of fraud and misuse of corporate assets by the bank’s CEO
  • CrossFit, Inc., as plaintiff in a high-profile false advertising and unfair competition lawsuit against a key competitor
  • The former Audit Committee chairman of a Chinese-based issuer in connection with government investigations and civil suits related to allegations of misconduct by senior management
  • Executives from a number of financial institutions in connection with investigations of alleged manipulation of various financial benchmarks, including LIBOR and ISDAfix
  • An individual from a major financial institution in connection with a US Attorney’s Office investigation of improper practices related to secondary market trading of asset-backed securities
  • Companies and individuals in connection with insider trading inquiries by the United States Attorney’s Office and FINRA
  • A hedge fund victimized by a Ponzi scheme in connection with criminal forfeiture proceedings
  • The independent directors and the audit committee of a major bank in connection with internal and government investigations related to a restatement of earnings
  • The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in connection with the trusteeship imposed by the UBC over the New York City District Council and related matters (elections, constitution, and bylaw revisions, etc.)
